A webinar organized by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) brought experts together to discuss the future of renewable energy in Pakistan. Titled “Emerging Trends in Pakistan’s Renewable Energy Sector: Charting the Agenda for 2030 and Beyond,” the event emphasized the necessity of integrating renewable energy into the country’s energy mix while addressing grid modernization and local manufacturing constraints.

Speakers stressed the importance of renewable energy in combating climate change and achieving a stable and sustainable energy ecosystem.
K-Electric outlined its investment plan, aiming to reduce reliance on imported fuels and increase dependence on green sources to 49% by 2030. The plan includes expanding transmission and distribution capacity to accommodate renewable energy.
Dr. Irfan Ahmed highlighted the need for self-reliance and local manufacturing in renewable energy projects due to foreign exchange constraints and the bumpy nature of Pakistan’s electrical network.
Dr. Khalid Waleed emphasized the importance of a gradual transition to renewable energy to prevent disruptions in the energy ecosystem. He also stressed the need for national dialogues to boost investor confidence in transmission and distribution projects.
Fozan Waheed discussed the challenges posed by sudden curtailments in wind power projects and emphasized the importance of learning from international best practices to ensure the sustainability of Pakistan’s energy sector.
Abubakar Ismail of Amreli Steels Limited highlighted the increasing interest in solar, wind, and biomass energy sources among industries. He emphasized the need for economic and political stability to foster growth in the renewable energy sector.
The session concluded with gratitude to all participants, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts in advancing renewable energy and grid modernization in Pakistan.
